FAFSA: Ways to Apply

FAFSA on the Web | Paper FAFSA

You can file electronically using FAFSA on the Web or complete a paper FAFSA. There is no charge for submitting this form. The way you submit your FAFSA does not affect the funding you receive.

FAFSA on the Web
Filing via FAFSA on the Web (in English or Spanish) is the fastest and easiest method of applying and offers advantages:

  • Detailed online help screens.
  • Online chat with a customer service representative.
  • Built-in error detectors that reduce the number of rejected applications.
  • Verification that the application was transmitted successfully.
  • Your application processed in three to five days, compared to two to four weeks with the paper FAFSA.

To start the process visit FAFSA on the Web and select Before Beginning a FAFSA. You will be guided step-by-step through the preliminary application process:

  • Gather necessary documentation.
  • Print a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet.
  • Apply for a PIN.
  • Check your eligibility for federal student aid.
  • Note important deadlines.

FAFSA FAQs

Is it faster to submit my application at “FAFSA
on the Web” than mailing the paper version?

YES. The process could be seven days faster when you use your PIN to electronically sign your application.

Can I use my friend’s PIN?
NO. Everyone must have their own PIN. If you need a PIN,
lost or forgot your PIN, or think someone knows your PIN,
request a new one.

I want to apply to three schools. Should I submit three FAFSAs?
NO. You can select up to six schools that you want to receive your FAFSA data by listing them on your application.

Will I be offered more financial aid if I complete the FAFSA online?
NO. Funding amounts offered are the same whether you
submit the FAFSA online or on paper.

Do you need to register with the Selective Service?
Males (age 18 to 25) who have not registered with the Selective Service will not be eligible for student financial aid.
