Research Study Programs and Destinations

Thoroughly research study programs and destinations. Your college may have a study abroad office with a website that could help you ask informed questions.

Schedule a meeting with the study abroad office to:

  • Discuss your options.
  • Learn about admissions requirements (including GPA).
  • Get opinions of students who have previously participated in those programs.
  • See if letters of recommendation are required. (If so, think about professors who you might ask to write one.)
  • Inquire about international programs offering courses that count toward your degree.

Start planning and researching the financial aspects of studying abroad including exchange rates, living costs, and financial aid. Ask your financial aid counselor about applying your financial aid package toward study abroad and finding scholarships.

Consider the details of leaving for an extended period. Do you need to withdraw officially from your school before you leave? What will happen to your campus living arrangements?

Learn as much as possible about the culture, history, politics, and economy of your destination country. Talk to people who have lived there, including emigrants from that country who now live in the United States.

Check out the study abroad search tool at StudentUniverse.
